Der Flughafen Westerland Sylt, entstanden aus einer ehemaligen Militärbasis, erfreut sich wachsender Beliebtheit unter vielen Piloten der allgemeinen Luftfahrt. Aber auch von kommerziellen Airlines wird Westerland zunehmend angeflogen, vornehmlich aus dem Raum Berlin.
Der Reiz der Insel Sylt spielt dabei natürlich eine besondere Rolle.
Im Wesentlichen wird die Piste 15/33 für die kommerzielle Luftfahrt genutzt. Die Piste 06/24 ist nur bei extrem ungünstigen Wetterbedingungen aktiv.
